Shawn Cummings

Shawn Cummings brings more than 18 years of international coaching experience across grassroots development, high-performance tennis and the U.S. collegiate system to Futures Tennis Academy.

Shawn’s journey in tennis began at the same non-profit academy where he first learned the game, providing him with an early appreciation for the impact quality coaching can have on a young player. His development as a player ultimately led to a full tennis scholarship in the United States, where he completed a Bachelor of Information Science while continuing his involvement in competitive tennis.

A USPTA High Performance and PTR-certified coach, Shawn has built an extensive coaching career across the United States and Australia. His experience includes coaching at several highly regarded American tennis programs, including the John McEnroe Tennis Academy in Long Island and Gotham Tennis Academy in New York, where he worked with players across junior development and performance pathways.

Shawn later progressed into U.S. collegiate coaching, holding positions with Molloy College and Pratt Institute. During his collegiate coaching career, he was recognised on multiple occasions for his leadership and results, earning two HVIAC Men’s and Women’s Conference Coach of the Year honours and helping guide teams to four HVIAC Conference Championship titles.

These experiences have given Shawn an extensive understanding of the pathway from junior development through to competitive and collegiate tennis, as well as the standards, preparation and commitment required for players looking to take their game further.

Since relocating to Australia in 2015, Shawn has continued to develop players across a broad range of ages and standards. He is currently Head Coach at Ardrie Park Tennis Club, one of Futures Tennis Academy’s key venues, where he combines on-court coaching with program leadership and the development of players and coaches within the venue.

Shawn’s coaching philosophy is centred around the individual player. He places a strong emphasis on building sound technical foundations, developing tactical understanding and creating an environment that allows players to progress confidently over the long term.

His qualifications extend across multiple areas of the sport, including USPTA High Performance, PTR Professional, Performance Pathway, Collegiate Pathway, Under-10 Tennis and Wheelchair Tennis certifications, giving him experience working with players across a particularly diverse range of tennis environments.

Away from the court, Shawn holds a Bachelor of Information Science, a Digital Diploma of Business and a Diploma in Social Media Marketing, providing an additional breadth of knowledge that complements his coaching and leadership experience.

With experience spanning grassroots tennis, elite academies, collegiate competition and venue leadership across two countries, Shawn brings a broad international perspective and a wealth of coaching knowledge to the Futures Tennis Academy team.
