45 YEARS IN THE MAKING
From the ATP circuit to a single pupil at East Malvern, Futures Tennis has grown into one of Australia's most awarded grassroots academies. Here's how it happened.
1979–1984
Owner Wes Horskins plays the ATP circuit for six years while coaching top juniors in Fuengirola, Spain — featuring in the Australian, Wimbledon and French Open championships.
1984
Wes starts coaching as a sole trader across six small clubs while completing a Diploma of Education.
1986
Founds Futures Tennis Academy, taking on the head coaching role at East Malvern Tennis Club with zero pupils.
1990–1995
Wins the lease at Malvern Tennis Centre. The team grows past 30 staff and 1,200 weekly players.
1996
Wes is appointed to the board of Tennis Coaches Victoria.
2000
Futures expands to four clubs with a new venue at Ardrie Park, coaching over 1,000 players each week.
2008
With the launch of TA's Hot Shots program, Wes is named one of 15 national Hot Shots ambassadors mentoring coaches.
2011
Wins the Hot Shots Newcombe Medal for Australia's Most Outstanding Academy.
2012
Wins the Club Coach Newcombe Medal for Australia's Most Outstanding Coaching Academy.
2016
Wins the Most Outstanding Club / Centre Newcombe Medal for Australia's best venue.
2021
Wes is inducted into the TCAV Hall of Fame.
2023
Wes is elected President of Tennis Coaches Victoria and leads its transition into Tennis Coaches Australia — now 800 members nationwide.
2024
Our school partnerships grow to 15, including Sacré Coeur, Shelford, Korowa and Caulfield Grammar.
2026
Futures acquires East Burwood Tennis Club and launches a new High Performance program alongside our participation programs.
